(event report from Lady Kathryn
of Tewkesbury) Due to the unexpected illness of the primary feastcrat, Don
Esteban, HL Teamhair pulled together the feast by herself. There were many
able gentles who came to her aid in this crisis. Don Esteban paved the way with
his meticulous planning so everything could work smoothly. There was a heavy
weapons lyst, run by Lai-Han Harisson. There were approximately seven entrants,
and the winner, David of Duntyr, received a beautiful 18" knife, handcrafted by
Lai- Han, valued at $200. The rapier practice transformed into a competition,
and Don Alfric Northwind won a rapier blade in their primary competition. There
was also an auction for the benefit of the Rolles Royal, with various jewelry
items donated by Mistress Laura, with a total of $350 raised. The only medical
emergency I was made aware of was a sprained ankle Saturday night during the
dancing at the feast hall. This was swiftly taken care of by the Kingdom
Chirurgeon, Baron Janos. We had guests from Canada who brought gifts to our
Crown from theirs. A gift basket was assembled for them to take back. Their
names were Lady Elsbette and Lord William. They told me they had a wonderful
time. They stated they rarely saw Bardic Circles in their Kingdom, and were
pleased to have found one at this event.
(report from Donal Pummer,
Historian Gleann Dubh) The site opened Friday night at 4:00 pm. It was a
very blustery, wet and noisy night, Caitlin McDowell and I used extra tent
stakes to make sure the tents didn't blow away during the night. There was
lots of lightning and thunder during the night with gust of wind coming off the
lake. Now we know where NOT to put up a tent. Moria, after setting up her
sales tent, also stayed Friday night. Friday evening was a real treat inspite of
the weather in that it enabled all to unwind. Melbrigda of Oak Glen, Annot
Healfdene, Fayeanna of Bannockburm and Dylan MacHagar made a day trip of the
event. Melbrigda of Oak Glen and Caitlin attended the Gold Couching class and I
attended the Beginners Illuminations class. It was a lot more work than I
realized. Caitlin entered her needlepoint cross in the Art/Sci competition and
won and Exceptional Merit. This was her first competition.

Champion of Glymmerholde Annual Lysts and Revel
(flyer) Talewinds,
January AS XXIX On Saturday 1-28-95, at Terry Park, Ft. Myers. "Feasting!
Fighting!, who will be belted this year? There will be two lysts; the
first to determine the new champion who shall never before have won a lyst and
one to challenge your street skills in our Rogues Lyst. Can you make it
down the alley to safety? As always, we will be serving our semi-famous
"Oh God, I can't possibly eat another bite feast, complete with after dinner
mints" Classes for the Martially Challenged, Activities for Munchkins.
Autocrat Baron Siegfried Heydrich; Feastcrat Galen the Wanderer.
event
report Early in the morning of 1-28-95, Terry Park i Ft. Myers experienced a
temporal change as the Shire of Glymmerholde began setting up for the Champion
of Glymmerholde Lyst and Revel. A mundane emergency delayed the arrival of the
Autocrat, Baron Siegfried Heydrich, but the other members present were capable
of the task of getting the site prepared. although most who attended the event
were from the surrounding area, there were others who came from Wyvernwood and
other areas. There were four fighters who fought for the title of "Champion of
Glymmerholde" and the belt which accompanies it. In the final reckoning, it was
Flautus who was victorious. Due to the small turn out of fighters, the rogue's
lyst which had been planned was not held. Instead, a bear pit contest was
conducted. Again, Flautus proved himself to be the best contestant on the field
that day. As the day progressed, the number of people present increased, and in
fact, tables were added in the feast hall a number of times to accommodate all
who feasted that day. The feast was served as a buffet and included a separate
dessert buffet afterwards. All went home full and satisfied that they had eaten
a feast fit for a king. The 'crats for the event were: Autocrat - Baron
Siegfried Heydrich; Feastcrat - Gaelen the Wanderer; Marshal - Lord Breuse
Hartswood; Herald - Lord Robin MacLeer; Reservations - Caitlyn ni Killian. Other
than these gentles, many people helped to make this event a reality. Most who
are active in the shire contributed dishes to the feast, a number of people
provided tents and pavilions for the fighters to change in and which provided a
feeling of the period, the Hospitaller loaned out a number of pieces of garb and
much feast gear. Julie deFronta served as water bearer for the fighters, and
many other people aided in various other ways. submitted by Caitlyn ni

St. Benet's Feast
The Barony of An Crosaire held their 12th Night
celebration dinner at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. This was a
particularly special occasion as we were the last group to use the church hall
before it burned down in 1992 and we were the first group (outside the church
members themselves) to be able to use the new parish hall since it had been
rebuilt. Our traditional 12th Night celebration is a dinner for members of the
Barony and guests. We had Duc pot luc with the Barony supplying the turkey
and ham and the members bringing the side dishes and desserts.
Approximately 45 people attended the dinner with approximately 22 attending the
revel afterwards. There was such a great deal of meat, bread and rice left
over that the autocrat staff donated the leftovers to St. Francis House, our
local homeless shelter. The weather had been so cold that the shelter was
overwhelmed with homeless and had run out of anything to feed them. Our donation
meant that everyone in the shelter had something to eat that night. As
part of our tradition on St. Benet, an absent member is elected as the person
who is responsible for everything (good and bad) that happens to the Barony
during the next year. This year's winner is Subadai the Bear. Our autocrat
for this event was Lady Dunlaith na Suil donn, with the able assistance of
members of Blackberry Hollow, Homba Den, and the House of the Open Door.

Shire of the Ruins Revel
(event report) On Saturday 2-11-95, the
Shire of the Ruins held their revel. The event was held at Camp Crickett, which
is part of Mary Holland Park in Barton. The event itself was very small, only 15
people showed up. There were 2 newcomers and a newcomers class was held by Betty
Gtierney. A Champion of the Ruins lyst was held by our Shire Marshal Kord Kurn
O'Farrell. He is squired to Duke Syr Llywellyn ap Cadwalder. There were 5
fighters present for the lyst. H.L. Takamitsu, Richard of Wiccum, Jacobus
Ripshaw, Lord Kurn and Parrish Simmons. The winner and Champion of the Ruins is
H.L. Takamitsu, in a very close fight with Lord Kurn. The final fight was with
glaives. There was a lot of honor and chivalry on the field and all fights were
fair and all well fought. H.L. Feargus MacBrus was the feastcrat. For lunch he
served chicken and beef stew and also offered a vegetarian stew. There was bread
and honey butter and muffins as well. For the feast later that evening H.L.
Feargus served pork, chicken, green beans, scotch eggs, bread and honey butter.
There was reveling into the night with those remaining, only a few spent the
night out there. The revel was a very cozy, nice event and a relaxing day.

The 9th Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire (Demo)

Medieval Faire, February 17-19, 1995 at the Alachua County Fairgrounds,
Gainesville, FL. Free admission for all artisans, entertainers, fencers,
craftsmen, and heavy weapons fighters. Space available to display your
talents and demonstrate your skills to an audience of 25,000 plus. Fighters and

sponsored by the Barony from March 1995 until March 1996. Autocrat Lady Finnula
MacLeod, called Takara, Co-autocrat Countessa Carmenetta Rosia Diez de
Rodrigues.
(event report - Baroness Natalija Varvara Stoianova) On
2-17/19-95 the Barony of An Crosaire assisted the City of Gainesville with the
9th Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Fair. We presented a living history pavilion,
with displays ranging from armor & chain mail, embroidery & lace making,
spinning & weaving, costumes and accessories, pottery and leatherwork, herbs
and domestics. HL Thomas du Lac brought and worked on the construction of
his "Tiny Tudor Teaching Tool" which is a miniature Tudor house he is building.
HL Cara demonstrated making pasanky eggs. Countessa Carmenetta dipped
dozens of beeswax candles and demonstrated soap making. Master Rurik cooked a
batch of mead over the open camp fire to a large group of interested fair
goers. Baroness Natasha had a wonderful time showing the apothecary table
and having the patrons handle and smell the herbs and products made from them.
This is a three day fair, Friday being school day. On Friday approximately 5,000
children, chaperons and teachers descended upon the fair. The main
attraction, as always, was the chain mail and armor and weapons with costuming
and the miniature house running close seconds.
Jorden Glen School Demo
(event report - Baroness Natalija Varvara
Stoianova)On 2-23-95, Master Rurik Petrovitch Stoianov and Baroness Ceridwen O'
Cahercommaun of the Barony of An Crosaire, went to Jorden Glen School in Archer
Fl to present a program on Medieval Life to lst to 5th grade students.
Master Rurik bravely donned his armor for an energetic game of "Whack the
Russian". All went smoothly with only one resounding blow to the helm delivered
by 5th grader Martin Johnson, son of SCA'ers Ian Mac Ian and Lisa the
Harper. No doubt the result of many years of watching SCA fighting.
The children were taught three country dances and tried their hand at designing
their own devices.
Central Florida Renaissance Festival Demo
On 2-24/26-95 the Shire of
Gleann Dubh participated in the Central Florida Renaissance Festival. The
festival is produced by Central Florida Festivals Inc. a Not-for-profit Florida
Corporation whose main mission is to assist local community organizations in
need of financial supplement by bringing into the area some of the most unusual
and entertaining festival events and re-distributing the proceeds from each of
these activities back into the community where it is most needed. The festival
relies on the participation it receives from various segments of the community
including its all volunteer staff as well as the generosity of the members of
the traveling national circuit of Renaissance/Medieval Fair performers,
merchants and artisans to make each annual event a reality. Each vendor
pledges a percentage of their profits to a local Central Florida Charity while
the majority of its professional performers work solely on "hat tips" for
subsistence during this weekend. Melbrigda set up her pavilion near the
elephant and camel rides. She brought her spinning wheel, carding paddles,
drop spindles and other apparatus to show how they worked. She had lambs
wool in the raw form (dirty and nasty) and after it had been washed. She also
demonstrated the spinning wheel. Caitlin set an illumination display and
worked on a scroll. She also gave talks on the different colors and the
different scroll designs in period. Sir Cedric noticed Caitlin's work and
asked her to prepare several scrolls for the upcoming coronation. The
whole shire assisted in completing the scrolls. Submitted by Donal (Donald

Masonic Lodge Demo
On 3-16-95 members of the Barony of An Crosaire held a
demo for the R. Shaffer Masonic Lodge. The Masons wanted us to explain what the
Society for Creative Anachronisms is about. This demo was an introduction ot the
SCA in general . Attending were Marthe Grau (Kratze), Master Rurik, Baroness
Ceridwen, Schrymagore, Cirocco, H.L. Finnula MacLeod, Lady Fine, Connull
MacKenzie and Bronwyn. During the dinner, Cirroco, Master Rurik and Connull
MacKenzie played and sang in turns, much to the delight of the lodge. Around
7:15pm we moved to the lodge room and for about 25 minutes talked about various
parts of the SCA. Baroness Ceridwen began by explaining the essentials, taken
largely from the press release on the first page of the KWH. Master Rurik talked
about the civil organization, such as the various offices and about royalty's
part in the Society. Lady Fine gave the Masons details on how an individual goes
about making a place for themselves and researches a persona. The arts and
sciences received attention from the H.L. Finnula MacLeod. This took up a good
portion of the time we had available to do the demo and therefore went directly
to a question and answer period.
The Masons asked us to give our
persona sketches, and most of the rest of the questions were about fighting.
Master Rurik donned his helm and allowed me to demonstrate how hard a fighter's
blow hits. We gave them the names of the various parts of armor, and Schrymagore
had a chance to boast of his chain mail and sword making skills. Afterward, he
was approached by two people who wanted to learn how to make swords. After the
questions, the Masons needed to hold their private meeting and we ended the
demo. submitted by Marthe Grau (Kratze).

Radio Reading Service Gets a Helping Hand
On St. Patrick's Day, 3-17-95,
members of the Shire of Glymmerholde assisted the Radio Reading Service in
raising funds to help augment their recently reduced budget. This service reads
local newspapers and national magazines over the air (on a side band of WSFP in
Ft. Myers). Equipment to hear this side band is in cooperation with Clancey's.
There was a tent set up outside the restaurant, where people waiting to be
seated inside could listen to Irish music and where they were treated to the
view of members of Glymmerholde in period dress. At various times during the
day, Baron Siegfried Heydrich, Marie Richer, Caitlyn ni Killian, Iain Campbell
of Pinewood Fen, Margaret MacGregor, Darius, and Marcie were present, among
others. It was a profitable day for the Radio Reading Service, and we were very
happy to help this service group. submitted by Caitlyn ni Killian, Historian
Spring Coronation
(flyer) Talewinds, February ASXXIX On 3-24/26-95, the
Shire of Oldenfeld hosts the Coronation of Sir Cedric Steinhauser and Baroness
Fara Steinhauser at Camp Wewa. There will be games, TRU classes, a rapier
lyst, and Executioner's Lyst, the Troubadour Laureate competition, an exquisite
feast and breakfast & Dessert by Duke Baldar. We are offering a tavern
supper to be served in the world famous Purple Unicorn Tavern. Listed autocrat:
Lady Bianca di Rienzi and Lord Giovanni di Rienzi. Head Cook: Mistress Katerina
Sbarbaro da Firenze.
(Natasha's comments) During the day many people
participated in the Thief Game. You could sign up to be a victim, or a
thief or both. Each victim was given five spring clothespins which they
were to place on their body. The victim if quick enough could catch the
thief and turn them in for punishment. There was also a drawing contest
held, to draw a mythical beast. There were two winners, one an exquisitely
drawn unicorn and the other a darling, funny cartoon dragon. There was
also a poetry contest in which each poet must write a poem using the list of
words supplied by the crat crew. This was really a challenge. Listed was a
horse race fun raiser for the Kingdom Library with the stalwart steeds being
hobby horses. There was a quest which included finding items and solving
riddles.
The competitions included an Executioner's lyst
(double-elimination heavy weapons lyst with Florentine or great weapon fighting)
a Rapier Lyst, Archer Competition, and the Queen's Yeoman Competitions.
The Troubadour Laureate competition was also held and won by Lady Wulflinda
Aethelwulf.
Other activities included a Box Lunch Auction, the
Princess' Luncheon (Dulcinea hosted lunch for the other children on
Saturday), period board games and TRU classes.
One of the nice
touches to this event was the renaming of the cabins, calling all of them
Inns. The round house was turned into a tavern, called the Purple Unicorn
Tavern where drinks could be bought and a tavern supper was available on
Saturday. Feast was held in the main hall, called Triton Hall for this
event, with Duke Baldar preparing breakfast on Saturday morning and dessert for
feast on Saturday night and Mistress Katerina Sbarbaro da Firenze preparing an
Italian feast for Saturday night.

DeLeon Springs Fl. "It is the 6th Century and Roman troops have left Britain.
Our Baroness, Gwennan ferch Gwydion o'Ddyved, calls all who value knowledge and
valor fight beside her to preserve our civilization, and stand with her against
the barbarian hordes who will bring darkness and misery. Help her crush the wild
invaders and then revel in a celebration of Spring." Scheduled activities will
include the Baron's Champion lyst and the Baron's Bowman. There will be classes,
games, wrestling, and early period fashion show and contest (with prizes), a
Celtic story hour, dancing in the hall after feast, bardic and much, much more.
Autocrat Countess Una of Blackberry Hollow, co-autocrat, Ld. Roibeard mac

Teamhair Gleann da Locha.
(event report) The event had approximately 152
persons participating, including the King and Queen Cedric and Fara, the Baron
and Baroness of Darkwater, the Baron and Baroness of Wyvernwood and of course
the Baron and Baroness of An Crosaire. There were 9 fighters in the heavy
weapons lyst and 7 fencers in the light weapons. Sir Terrell won the
Baron's Champion lyst; HRH Cedric won the Baron's Bowman
competition; Lord Alfric won the Baroness' Blade competition. There
was a lot of entertainment - a treat for all the women was the bare-chested
wrestling. At feast Lady Isabeau du Mont-Saint-Michel performed a drunken
soldier act which everyone said was a riot. Also at feast was the Mongal
and Mongalettes chorus who sang the "Pict Song" to the assembled nobles, with
Heather holding the prompt scroll during the song. The prompt scroll was almost
as large as Heather and as they finished a line she would flip the scroll over
her head and let it drop to the ground behind her. All anyone could see
shortly was a moving scroll of paper and two little hands holding it. During the
rapier lyst Roibeard mac Slaughahin and Jean Frances performed a drunken
Tic-Tac-Toe drawing the game in the dirt with their rapiers. One of the most
popular classes was Mistress Bar-bah-rah's Eatable Plant Class and Walk in the
Woods.

Masonic Lodge Demo
On 4-20-95, members of the Barony of An Crosaire held
the second part of the Masonic Lodge Demo. This was the fighting demo. As
before, we were treated to an excellent meal, and Cirocco once again treated the
diners to several songs. Lady Meadhbh also sang for us and played on her harp.
Sir Erika gave a very lively recorder solo. The songs were wrapped up with Vivat
the Dream, as a duet between Cirocco and Lady Meadhbh and our particpation on
the chorus. Besides the three mentioned above, there were Lord Connor and
his lady JoAnne, Lord Alessandro di Lombardi, Lord Nikandre (Stradd),
Schrymagore, Sir Seosaidh and myself (Marthe Grau). We had plenty of time after
dinner for Lord Connor and Lord Allesandro to get into armor, Stradd and Sir
Seosaidh having eaten in plate. The first half of the demo, as before, was an
introduction to the fighting arts within the SCA. Having sent most of my
potential speakers off to get armored up, I talked about the very basics, and
how one learns to fight. Sir Seosaidh explained the differences and similarities
between a modern day knight and a medieval knight. He also gave the audience
quite a rousing description of the modern melee. Combat archery was handled by
Sir Erika. Although we did not have any fencers there to represent that sport, I
did make sure to mention that it was a Society martial art as well.
At
this point we made sure the area in the lodge room was clear and brought the
fighters in for a hands-on demonstration. The four fighters (Connor, Alessandro,
Stradd and Sir Seosaidh) paired off for a few rounds, and then had a stirring
two on two melee. Mr. Harris, my contact for the demos, said later that he had
expected the action to be a lot slower and more lumbering. He was very
impressed, he said, with the speed and power of the blows. A brief question and
answer period followed. We were asked to give our personas and also our mundane
occupations. My contact was delighted by the proceedings.

event report from Kathryn of Tewkesbury "We held our annual St. George's
Faire in April and financially, we did very well (this was a bit unexpected). We
had no problems with the site or the camp director. There was an incident the
first night when a minor was discovered on site without a parent/guardian.
The person who's name was on the release form showed up the next day and was
apprized of the rules and regulations concerning this sort of behavior. This
adult agreed they were in the wrong and apologized a great deal to many of the
'crat staff. H.L. Elfwyn de Barfleur & Master Taliesyne
did an outstanding fighter-auction fund-raiser and thanks to them $452 was
given to the Arts/Sci office.
Announcement from Don Esteban Vicente Manfique de Santiago "The Households of
Tricitrus Abbey and Vynecorne's Hospyce cordially invite you to attend the Vigil
of HL Iefan Colledig ap Dynfwal Abertawe in preparation for his Elevation to the
Order of the Laurel and the Post-Elevation Celebration for Duena Ysabela
Celestina Manrique de Palma y Majorca, in honor of her Elevation to the Order of
the Pelican. The Vigil will start Friday, april 28th at 9:00pm and last until
Sunrise of the 29th. This invitation is open to all the Populace of Trimaris.
The Post-Elevation Celebration for Duena Ysabela is a surprise so please make
every effort to not inform her. She has been told she is on-site coordinator and
she is unaware we are also honoring her at this event. She will be told at the
opening ceremonies at 9:00 pm in the roundhouse. Afterwards, H.L. Iefan welcomes
counsel during his vigil in the Pavilion while guests partake of the
refreshments and entertainment in the Roundhouse. there will be breaks at
Midnight and 3AM, otherwise HL Iefan will welcome guests until Sunrise. Their
Most August Majesties of Trimaris, Sir Cedric Steinhauser and Baroness Fara
Steinhauser have consented to hold the Elevation ceremony for H.L. Iefan in the
Royal Court on Saturday Evening.
(Natasha's comments) The Roundhouse was set
in the Elizabethan period, with tables in a "U" shape, the walls hung with
banners, and a multitude of candles illuminated the vast quantity of food
that graced the tables. There were vast quantities of various plain
and exotic finger foods, cakes and cookies and other deserts which words are
inadequate to describe. Fruit dishes abounded and the Wassail and Herbal
Tea flowed. The whole atmosphere was one of the most elaborate but yet
charming that I have experienced in some time. Iefan had a
little pavilion set up alongside the Roundhouse in which he was given a rug for
the floor, a comfortable chair with a cushion , a footstool, a side table with
candles and other things to make him comfortable. One of his gifts was a
bowl of fresh herbs which was both symbolic in good wishes and and to make the
atmosphere in his little pavilion sweet smelling and comfortable. I am not
sure that Iefan needed a chair for he seemed to float several inches above the
ground. I have no idea how many people attended Iefan that evening, I only
know that there was an extremely long line waiting to see him. I think
that Don Esteban and the members of Tricitrus Abbey and Vynecorne's
Hospyce created one of the most delightful vigils I have ever attended.
Gathering of the Clans
(flyer) Talewinds, April XXIX On 5-5/7-95, The
Barony of Darkwater presents the Gathering of the Clans IX, held at Camp
Wewa. Join in the Highland Games - paint-a-pict, grappling, kilted run,

Annual Order of the Grey Beard Lyst, Archery Competition, Clans Lyst
(traditional Scottish Weapons only). Autocrat Laird Caomhanach mac

(event report from "Revelry", June 1995 AS XXX) Unto the
Populace of the Barony of Darkwater doth Laird Caomhanach mac Alasdair send
greetings: I would like to than every gentle who attended Gathering of the
Clans and made it such a complete success. We had about 180 people on site
and turned a nice profit of around $200.00. The weather was lovely, and we
even had a volunteer to lifeguard the pool. Congratulations to Laird
Cathal, the Champion of the Games. His strength and skill caused him to
win the Caber Toss, Hay toss and grappling contest. Laird Cameron won the
Kilted Run, with Baron Cailean winning for style; Seraphina's beautiful music
brought her the glory of winning the Bardic Competition. Congratulations
as well to Laird Drell for his prowess on the lyst field; of 22 fighters he held
the field. Laird Drell's knees were so highly regarded, winning him the
Best Knees Contest. Sir Erika's arrows flew straight and true, allowing
her to win the Hunt for the Clans (Laird Caomhanach won the Stone Throw and,
with Oriana, the Haggis Hurl - Rachel). I would like to extend my personal
thanks to Sir Demetrius and Lady Ekaterina for their delicious work in the
kitchens; Lady Arafel for her tireless money counting. Laird Fernando for
being site herald; Laird Cathal and his household for guarding the gate so
diligently, Laird Dammartin for crying the site, and Corey and Brand for all of
their assistance during the weekend. My greatest debt of thanks must go to
my wife, Mistress Rachel. Without her help and knowledge, I might never
have even gotten the flyer to Talewinds. Once again, I thank everyone who
attended and who helped out in so many ways. If I have forgotten anyone
above, please forgive this poor tired autocrat...I'm sometimes surprised I can
remember my own name! In service to the Dream, Laird Caomhanach mac Alasdair.

Gleann Dubh Fighter Practice/Birthday Party
At fighter practice Saturday,
May 14th the Shire of Gleann Dubh gave Melbrigda (our Seneschal) a birthday
party. Caitlin made a birthday scroll with Celtic Kangaroos for all to sign.
King Cedric and Queen Fara were two of the many that signed. Caitlin also made a
scroll just for the shire members to sign. Caitlin also presented the section of
the fabric wall to be used at Pennsic. It is of Celtic know work around the
outside and in the middle Celtic Kangaroos in Melbrigda's colors of green and
gold. Melbrigda was apparently caught off guard and was very surprised and
moved. King Cedric and Queen Fara held Court. This does not usually happen at a
fighter practice I am told. Nnot Heafdene and Caitlin were each awarded the

From the Kingdom Seneschal, H.L. Olwen ferch Rhodri,
Talewinds, July AS XXX "Many thanks to the Barony of An Crosaire who hosted one
of the most enjoyable TMT's in my memory. With over 1000 people on site over the
weekend, they kept the bathrooms clean, kept the traffic flowing, handled
reservations with a smile, and provided an environment within which to truly
appreciate the current Middle Ages. I think everyone will agree that
having ice for sale on site avoided unnecessary trips off site, and thus avoided
more car traffic within camp. TMT provided a good training ground for our
10th Anniversary celebration.
From the Autocrat of TMT, Master Rurik
Petrovitch Stoianov, O.L. "It is with the deepest gratitude that I come before
you to thank all the wonderful people who helped make TMT a tremendous success.
Without these fine and dedicated folk we would not have been able to make the
event as pleasant as it was. To begin with the entire Cratting Crew would
like to thank the populace for their cooperation and understanding with the
parking procedures. This enabled us to accommodate everyone without having to
resport to off site parking. I personally would like to thank the Cratting
Crew themselves - Co-autocrat and Merchantcrat - Syr Terrell Dunstan Arminger;
Feastcrat - Baroness Ceridwen o Cahercommaun; Reservations - Baroness Gwennan

Securitycrat - Lord Subadai the Bear; Site Chirurgeon - Baron Janos de Kleine;
Classcrat - Contessa Carmenetta Rosa Diez de Rodrigues; Entertainmentcrat -
Kyria Eirene Agapia of Mytilene. All the above crats could not have gotten
everything done without the help of tireless and dedicated individuals. There
were so many people who volunteered to help at this event that it would be
impossible to name them all here (some of whom never even gave their names). But
there are those who went way above and beyond our wildest hopes. Our special
thanks to Baron Thaalabi, Lord Donnal, Connell, Kratze, Bronwyn, Marianna,
Schrymagore, Chabi, Stephanina, Lord Bacton, Vlad Anastasia, Maeve, Fine, Joseph
Kathkart, Baron Heinrich, Gunter of Castlemere, Giovanna of Southkeype and
Daffydd of Blackthorne. If there are those that were not listed, we
apologize for the oversight and extend our thanks to them as well. Having
ice for sale on site seemed to have been well received and the Barony of An
Crosaire will have it again at Tenth Year Coronation. We hope to continue
this service at all Coronations and Crown Lysts.
report from Vlad din
Wallacha This TMT was the 10th year Crown Lyst for Trimaris and was sponsored by
the Barony of An Crosaire. This was the first event that I was involved
with the Autocrating team. When I arrived on the Thursday before the event
with my lady, the Autocrat, Master Rurik, and his crew were already there.
We discovered that the camp had made changes to the physical main hall we were
unaware of which cut the porch area in half. There were also camp
employees living in the main hall rooms. Needless to say the Autocrat was
beside himself over this as it not only put mundanes directly in the middle of
the event but it took up at least two rooms for the event. This was not the
first problem to challenge the autocrating crew. The week before the event
we were collating the event newsletter and discovered there were 30+
errors. We had to quickly find a way to make a potential bad start at
least look like we had already solved the problem. I am not sure who or how many
of us thought of making it a "find the mistake" game, but it woan event of this
size can easily have its share of behind the scenes problems well before the
event even occurs.
After the hall problem was taken care of the ice
truck arrived. It was placed on the right side of the main hall.
Well, none of us realized that the whole hall was run on 20 amp breakers.
I had been wondering why no one had turned on the ceiling fans in the hall until
I tried and found that the breakers had been tripped. Baron Thaalabi
fortunately has electrical knowledge and told us that the motor on the ice
machine was kicking the breakers. Thank Whomever you pray to, he was able
to solve the problem with the power supply. With the help of Schrymagore
and his truck we were able to move it to the other side.
Finally it
was time to open the gates on Friday and it was the type of day we all figured
it would be. Michele and I sat at gate for the 6:00 shift. Lord Subadai had the
arduous task of supervising and organizing this gate. The magnitude of
this job was on pare with any I've overseen and I've done the International Air
Show parking and gate for the Schenecatady Airfield and Airport. While the
numbers were greater we had the authority of the Airport police and the National
Guard MP's to back us up. Logistically, I believe Lord Subadai's job was
overtly harder - this is a volunteer organization, thus no authority to bear
against tired, hungry, and sleepy SCAer's. At least 2/3's of the people
who were on site that weekend arrived Friday night. After my stint at the
gate I went to help at reservations. It was then I came to understand why
logistics between the gate and reservations is soooooooo!!!! important.
Finally we couldn't keep the registration desk open any longer due to the
exhaustion of the reservation crat.
Summer Art/Sci
(flyer, Talewinds May AS XXX, 1995) On 6-9/12-95, The
Incipient Stronghold of the Northern Marches presents 1995 Summer Arts and
Sciences Competition at the North Florida Christian Services Camp in Keystone
Heights, FL. Along with the Art/Sci competition there will be many
children's activities, archery competition, masque laureate competition, heavy
and light weapons lyst, a candle light feast, and the Queens reception for
Children. The autocrat Lady Corinne Castillaq, Feastcrat, Lady Kirar
Rowland.
From the Crown, letter in June's Talewinds "....For the heavy weapons lyst
there is a wonderful prize (certificate for Master Morric's Armory). As a
fundraiser, the populace will be able to bid on their favorite fighters with the
hopes that their fighter will place well in the tournament allowing them to an
early choice of a prize. We hope that any and all who have talent will be
willing to place a prize on the table in support of this fundraiser...." Cedric,
King Fara, Queen.
(report from Natasha) This was to be the trial
run for the new Art/Sci rules and competition format created by the Kingdom
Arts/Science Officer Master Jed Silverstar. There were quite a few entries
this year and the competition seemed to run smoothly. Jed stated he wanted
to have a large number of judges so that it would not take so long to judge the
entries and this seemed to work. Although there were a number of entries
where there were a lack of judges, the idea that entrants could judge in the
category they entered not only helped with the number of entries but also helped
with the number of judges. Another change was the encouragement of the
entrants to stand with their entries so the judges could talk directly to the
entrant was an added plus. There were a number of glitches, as was
expected, and everyone was requested to write their suggestions and problems to
Jed so the system could be streamlined. The biggest change was to allow
people to amass service points for helping with the event crew, judging the
entries, and teaching classes. This was toscore for the individual and for
the group.
The winner of the Patron of the Arts & Sciences (best
shire/barony total) was the Barony of An Crosaire, the winner of the Paramount
Award (best total of award scores) was Baroness Ceridwen o Cahercommaun of An
Crosaire, the winner of Crown's Acclaim (best single item chosen by TRM) was
Baroness Natalija Varvara Stoianova; The winner of the Coronet's Acclaim (best
item chosen by THR) was Schrymagore of An Crosaire; the winner of the Laurels'
Acclaim (item selected by most Laurels) was *; the winner of the Performers'
Acclaim (best single item in the 300s category) was *; the winner of the
Pentathlon (best 5-item score spanning 5 divisions) was *.
This
particular weekend was stifling hot, we were told the heat index was 99 degrees
and there was no air movement whatsoever. I am so glad there was a
air-conditioned hall to hold the competitions in or we would have had serious
problems with heat exhaustion. I still do not know how the fighters were
able to hold the lysts and survive. The archery competition was won by
Bacton, the light weapons by Travis, known as Father Dove, and the heavy weapons
by ?. There was a auction of the fighters as a fund raiser with prizes
donated by various artisans in the Kingdom.
The feast was excellent,
this was the last event for the feastcrat, Lady Kiara Rowland, as she is moving
out of kingdom, and she prepared massive amounts of food. The only problem
with North Florida Christian is that the small hall, where the kitchen is
located, is not air-conditioned and the food had to be transported from the
kitchen to the main hall. Unfortunately, this creates logistic problems
and delays. Due to the heat of the day and the length of time between
removes, much food was wasted as the few people who were there for feast filled
up rapidly.

from "At Sword's
Point", Aug. 1995 by Lady Caterina Ginevra Falconiere "On Saturday, July 8th,
the Household of Tricitrus Abbey, which is headed by my Laurel, Master Justin of
Kent, Order of the Laurel in Calligraphy and Illumination, hosted their annual
Scriptorum coupled with a Heraldic Roadshow. This event took place in the huge
Fellowship Hall of St. Peter and St. Paul the Apostle church, which had a full
kitchen and eight classrooms. The hall was secluded from the main church by a
forested area. We started as near to SCA time as possible (at least an
hour late) with an introduction by the "Abbott" (with the Site Herald, Iain,
playing off as "Costell" by default - we were sitting, he kant!). In addition to
the Scribal Arts of Calligraphy 101 by Master Iefan the Lost, Architectural
Capitals by Lord Godfrey, and the Day in the Life of a Calligraphic Cell by
Master Justin, there were Heraldry classes given by Duena Ysabela, Mistress
Laura de Botelesford, and Countess Enriquetta. Additionally, Countess
Enriquetta brought with her a goodly supply of her personal collection of rare
and quite real artifacts, which included four Illuminated Pages framed and
encased in glass for protection, a music scroll on vellum, a parchment in Latin,
and several books - one written in the 16th century on the Orders of Knighthood
and Other Orders in England, France, Spain and Italy.
I must admit
that I skipped a few classes looking at the artifacts and searching through the
Book of Knighthood to find the Seven Sins and Seven Virtues which Countess
Enriquetta said is in one of the chapters. (Imagine looking through a real 16th
Century book!) Alas, I did not find the passage I was looking for, but the
challenge is still there and I shall continue later. What I did find was the
French ceremony for Crowning a King and a Queen, punishments inflicted on the
disobedient, the different Orders with their vows and the punishments if not
followed, and the Coats of Arms of each of the Orders.
My
recommendation is that if you are interested in artifacts of this kind, go buy a
pair of cloves and bring them with you at all times. Articles as precious as
these should not be handled with the bare hands as you have both oils and acids
which degenerate the fibers. A library or museum will not allow you near their
articles without gloves to begin with. More on this kind of instruction at
another time. the objective of the Scriptorums is actually the instruction
of calligraphy and illumination to those interested in these areas. As we
have so few true calligraphers and illuminators in the Kingdom Art/Sci, I am
personally interested in developing my skills and training others in this art. I
do not feel that we give our artisans in this field enough support. Of course,
this is probably due to the misconception that it's too easy to paint in Xeroxed
scrolls, which a child can do. Believe me, this is not the preference of any
true calligrapher/illuminator that I know of! If you are prepared for a
challenge, I shall take you through what it is like to do a scroll the way it is
supposed to be done. I await your request. Royal Court at the Scriptorum
by Lady Caterina Ginevra Falconieri
Following the Scriptorum and its
feast of seven removes, including a huge fu of Their Majesties King Cedric and
Queen Fara, with the child princess, Dulcinea, attending. Oh! but I must
take you back to the Court Preparation earlier in the day. There was a question
at the opening of the event of whether Their Majesties would be in attendance at
the event, which I was able to confirm that they would, and whether or not there
would be a court, which I had been told was ...iffy! All morning it was ...iffy!
Even after they arrived it was ...iffy! Most of the afternoon it was ...iffy!
Suddenly, in the last class of the day, I was summoned. We were obviously going
to have a Court.
Out came the scroll boxes and into a private room
with Their Majesties. I even had to borrow a calligraphy pen because I had been
put in time out - Their Majesties were kind enough to waive the time out for me!
(Chronicler's buttinsky: Are we going to be told why she was in time out?)
The King wished for a particular Grant scroll to have the arms painted in
immediately. What a great time for a Scriptorum! Being one of the only two
warranted Heraldic Painters in Trimaris, I went in search of ...an unassuming
victim, I mean volunteer, which I immediately found outside the door..it was
Lady Bronwytn. We even convinced Dulcinea to paint a card which she gave to the
Grant recipient. Meanwhile, I was running errands and calligraphing. Finally, I
was charged with finding Master Iefan, whom they wished to herald their court.
He was nowhere to be found. Eventually he was found and the message was
delivered to him. I was called back to the prep room to fill in a line on a
scroll. Master Iefan was trying to convince Their Majesties that there was
a new person who they should try out, he has a wonderful heraldic voice,
garb near their time period...No! they insisted they wanted Master Iefan. I left
the room but was called in again to fill in another line. As I took my paper to
the shelf were Master Iefan was working, Queen Fara stepped in between us to
chant with me.
Just before court, my cousin, Hon Lord Giuseppe
Francesco da Borgia, arrived. Once court began and the first recipient was
called forth, it was painfully obvious that gentlemen were few, for my
cousin, on the other side of the room, was the only one to stand and escort the
lady forward and back to her seat.
As an example of chivalry, I
wish to point out another incident. Lady Fionnghuala Shuile Uaini, who is of
Celtic persona, was called before the Crown. Knowing her well, both my cousins,
Hon. Lord Giuseppe and Lord Godfrey, stood up in her honor but did not escort
her. In the past Lady Fionnghuala made it clear that in her period and culture
only her husband, father or brother could escort her. If they were not
present, no one should escort her. They respected her wi their respect by
bowing.
(the author listed the names of the award recipients, which
are listed above. ed.)....In the midst of several, my name was called. I didn't
realize it at first until everyone turned and looked at me. I though I was in
trouble! Then Giuseppe was there and escorted me forward. All the sport with
Master Iefan in Court Preparation was so his fine calligraphic hand would put my
name on the scroll for the Argent Scale. Queen Fara had stepped between us to
chat because I had approached him while he was working on my scroll. She was so
graceful about it that I had no idea what waqs going on! Standing before them in
court was truly a shock. They nipped me one good! ?Dulcinea, their Majesties'
daughter, was very sweet and sealed the honor with a hug!"

by Scadians and members of the Paladin Society. The day also included a display
of various crafts, including some gorgeous mail armor made by the Paladin kids.
Refreshments included a castle cake, made of devil's food, which was promptly
demolished by such siege weapons as knives and forks.

from Glymmerholde's newsletter "Glymmernote" November
1995. First let's talk about Fall Coronation. About 35 people from the
shire were in attendance. We camped, primarily, as a group again this year and
arranged our meals, for the most part, as a group as well. We participated in
the Coronation Parade of Baldar and Asa, and in fine fashion I might add! Man
other shires were decked out in their absolute finest, fanciest, most glittery
and fanciful garb and regalia - and although our contingent looked sharp and
well presented, we opted for the "cute" factor to tickle the hearts of the
royalty. Thanks, little Bruce, for trying to pilfer the Queen's ring, then
kissing her hand. We won big time cute points for that! Several shire members
volunteered to run silly games for the weekend and although we didn't have the
turnout for the games that we would have liked to have had, the games which were
planned were great and can be used at another event. Big time kudos go out to
Constance, Ian Campbell, Sonja the Gelder, Lord Bruse and Liam for all their
efforts for the silly games. although things didn't go our way sometimes, you
all did a great job planning them and organizing them! Our own Alexander
"Haggis" Mackay authorized with the Kingdom Rapier Marshal, then proceeded to
place THIRD in the Queen's Champion's Lyst! Many of the kingdom's rapier
fighters were very impressed with Alexander's skills. the shire presented
Alexander with a dagger as a "Congratulations on Doing So Well, Haggis!"
present, and there was much rejoicing later at the party thrown in his honor -
complete with belly dancers, drums and general revelry.
Not to be
outdone, our own Baron Siegfried Heydrich, affectionately known as Siggie, was
elevated to the Order of the Pelican! Master Siegfried was presented with a
crystal and pewter Beer Stein from the shire members as a token of our
congratulations and best wished. Siegfried has worked many, many years for this
great honor and we are all very proud of him.
Several members of the
shire assisted in the presentations of scrolls at Heraldic court and the
Chocolate-covered Cherries at Feast on Sunday evening. My undying gratitude goes
to Liam, Julie, Ld. Bruse, Sonja the Gelder, Lady Allysandra, Alexander and
whomever else helped with the painting of scrolls. We presented 23 scrolls in
all, and Their Majesties were very pleased with the presentation. Also, muchos
gracias to Lady Allysandra and Libby for making the Chocolate- covered Cherries
for Their Majesties. The goodies were presented at Sunday night's feast, and
after carefully sliding the cherries from the serving dish, we presented Their
Majesties with an engraved gold and silver serving platter which read" Baldar
and Asa, Trimaris 10th year Coronation A.S. XXX, Shire of Glymmerholde". Their
Majesties were most grateful for both the gifts. I also made it a point to
personally introduce Alexander Mackay to Their Majesties and Her Majesty
congratulated him again on his performance.
My gratitude for all those
who volunteered to bring food for our camp feasts and for all those who cooked
all the meals - (they) were great, delicious, stupendous and very
generously distributed. I can't recall right now who exactly did which meal, and
I know I'm gonna forget someone, but David Gee and family did Saturday morning
breakfast, dinners were provided and cooked by Sonja, Constance, Iain, Ld.
Robin, Ld. Bruse, Gawain, Michael Raghnaid and Alexis, Liam, Libby, Julie,
Alexander, Chris and Eve. - Margaret MacGregor, Seneschal
from Sangre del Sol's "At Sword's Point", September 1995 Trimaris
celebrated its 10th anniversary as a kingdom early this month, with a coronation
court so large that it had to be held on the lyst field. The day's events began
with the final court of King Cedric and Queen Fara, in which they favored two
members of Southkeype with awards. Joseph of Itil got his long overdue Award of
Arms, and Lord Cole of Corwall, who received his AOA from their Majesties only
three months ago, was awarded the Tradewinds of Trimaris.
Of
course, the whole point of the final court is to see just how the soon-to-be
late king gets hoisted off the throne. In this case, it was the queen who was
assassinated, while the grief- stricken king went storming off to avenge
her death. He apparently died in some subsequent foreign battle, for the
next thing we knew, the populace was called forth to witness the coronation of
King Harold. Regretfully, I didn't witness much, since this coronation was held
down by the lake, where there were no chairs. What ai mostly saw was the backs
of all the people standing in front of me, though the sound effects were good.
King Harold was crowned with the ecclesiastical help of Master Justin of Kent,
while I puzzled over where he came from, since I didn't recall Harold winning
the lyst. All was made clear when a man interrupted the court to announce the
coming of Duke Sir Baldar Longstrider to claim the throne. The messenger, being
the bearer of bad news, was killed for it, and when Baldar arrived with his men
in a longboat, a bloody battle commenced. The forces of Harold were
routed. The victorious Baldar refused to slay Harold, since he was an
anointed king, so his consort, Asa Flaxenhar did it for him. The Queen for Less
Than a Day willingly agreed to be paid off with a generous pension, and Justin,
as the anointing archbishop, quickly acquiesced to the inevitable, furst tucking
away a gold casket from the sight of the conquering eye.
The real
coronation took place later in the afternoon, and included a heraldic procession
as all the baronies, shires and other groups came forward to present their
colors and pledge their loyalty to the Crown. Representing Sangre del Sol were
Lady Rhiannon Firewalker, as the herald, Baron Koppel fun Bauriaux, wearing his
new coronet, Hon. Lady Elizabeth fitzRandolph, Tiarn Manx holding the shire
banner, and myself. Our Seneschal, Bantiarna Eachna Muirin Der Macha, had also
intended to be in the processional, but the wait was so lengthy and the sun so
hot, that she had to leave to take care of the new baby, Rowan. Being in the
processional meant I couldn't see it, but I can testify to the delightful
display from the Shire of Oldenfeld right behind ge green dragon, and a huge
paper mache head of Baldar. The next day, Sangre presented gifts to the new king
and queen, boxes carved by Rhiannon. King Baldar appeared particularly pleased
with his box, which had a longboat cared on it.
Finally, the weekend
ended with the climatic burning of Asgard. The encampment of Baldar's household,
Asgard, included magnificent castle walls, a beautiful display that did much to
set the scene. On the final night, I'm told, Asgard celebrated its triumph by
taking apart the walls and burning them. What a pity - Lady Sanchia th Sly

All Things British Festival
Glymmernotes, November 1995 On
11-11/12-95 as we have for the past two years, the Shire will be participating
in the All things British Festival at the Lee Alliance of the Arts Compound on
MacGregor Blvd. This year we have the opportunity to expand our involvement with
the festival on several different fronts.
First, in addition to on
stage fighting demo's on Saturday, we have a large booth space to use. We will
be displaying items of interest to the general public such as costuming,
weapons, armor, calligraphy and illumination, and many other items that
demonstrate what it is that we do in the SCA. We also have the opportunity to
raise some money for the Shire.
Thanks to Sonja the Gelder, who has
generously volunteered her horse, we will be offering pony rides to children.
The horse will be decked out in his very own horsey surcoat and children will
have the opportunity to dress in a little bit of garb and have their photo's
taken on horseback wearing simple period garb. We are also going to have a kid's
dress-up area, where children can have their photos taken with perhaps some more
sophisticated garb. This should be a lot of fun for the kids and their families
and should be a good fund raiser for the group.
We will also have a
"period" rummage sale at our booth. Any items that you can donate to the shire,
that would be appropriate - such as paintings or artwork of a period nature,
books, nick- nacks, hats, goblets, leather goods, etc.
Lastly, the
British commonwealth club has asked us to please help them with setup on
Saturday, November 11 for the festival and help with general duties during the
Rugby Match on Sunday, November 12. Strong backs and dedicated individuals are
needed for this work and we really owe it to them to help as much as we can.
