Talewinds, vol.8, no.1, January AS XXIII 2-4-89, Atlantia Once
again as Winter approaches the Kingdoms of Atlantia and Trimaris find themselves
in conflict. Although the Monarchs of both Kingdoms have tried to resolve the
differences, it does seem hopeless...Armed conflict is the only answer, and
so...War. On the 4th day of February AS XXIII, these two Kingdoms and
their allies will meet at Lynch's River State Park near Florence, S.C. to settle
their dispute. Autocrat Duke Olaf Askoldssonn

May AS XXIV A Brief Account of the Late War in Atlantia by Erich von Rabenskalt
und von Kampf
In vengeance for the last Atlantian invasion of our realm,
ignominiously crushed by the late King Seosaidh, this February our Sovereign
Lord King Solomon led a small Trimarian army deep into Atlantia's southernmost
province. Striking with the speed of fire-dragons, the King's forces ravaged the
Atlantian March with fire, sword and cigar butts. In the cold, drizzling dawn of
February 4, however, the Trimarian army was brought to bay by a large Atlantian
force on the fateful field of Lynch River.
Although outnumbered by
more than two to one (rumor hath it that 80 Trimarian warriors were undismayed -
well, maybe just a bit). Led by King Solomon himself, and inspired by the
presence of our beloved Queen Chelsea, the army formed for battle with unshaken
discipline. Far- famed Trimarian warlords Duke Aaron Breck Gordon, Earl Seosaidh
Mac Seosaidh, and Count Quentin ap Wryngard were chief among the King's
warriors. The Barons of Darkwater and Wyvernwoode and the noble knights Sir
Trincula and Sir Brendan also followed their King into battle, while household
badges of the Spyder, dun Tir, Backsword, Goldstar and Asgard were worthily
represented on the field. More, her royal highness Crown Princess Elspeth
herself fought amongst the host, smiting the foe with her own fair hand.
The Trimarian line was formed with a strong, fast-moving force under
the King's own command on the right. The battle-plan was for the center and left
to delay the enemy advance, while the Royal unit quickly smashed the Atlantian
left and hit their line from the rear. Truly, it is said, however, that few
battle-plans survive contact with the enemy. Such was the Atlantian numerical
advantage that they were able to envelope Trimaris and roll up the line. In
fierce fighting, the Trimarian army perished to the last fighter.
After a brief pause, ten chosen champions from each army engaged. As
neither king was permitted to venture his person in combat the Trimarian
champions were Duke Aaron, Earl Seosaidh, Count Quentin, Sir Trincula, Sir
Brendan, Lord Gotfried of Frisia, Lord Treve Morningstar, Lord Jonathan
Whitehart, Lord Otto, and Lord Arlic. Despite Trimarian valor, Atlantia again
had the better. Duke Olaf of Atlantia slaying Sir Brendan in the final encounter
decided the contest.
Now came the turn of the archers to strive for
victory. The target was a Viking ship made of hay bales, with handsome dragon
prow and sternpost. Crewing the ship was a stuffed, man-sized figure. In time
firing massed archers of each kingdom in turn launched flights of arrows at the
ship. Victory was determined by the number of arrows striking the vessel, with
additional points for shafts striking the dummy. Alas, when the totals were
rung, Atlantia's archers carried the day - by, as I heard, five arrows.
After a seemly pause there followed an epic bridge battle. The bridge
with its hay bale parapets, spanning a perilous gorge. Warriors falling from it
did not drown, but could crawl to the side and rejoin their armies. Since the
gorge was deep, archers could not fire into it. As the two armies formed at the
bridge-heads, the vast numbers of the Atlantians became apparent. Earl Seosaidh
was heard to say "I didn't think that they outnumbered us by that much!"
Nonetheless, Trimaris formed up confidently, shield wall to the front, backed by
pikes, glaives and other pole arms massed behind the pikemen to deal with
breakthrough, while archers formed on the flanks.
The battle
demonstrated once more the excellence of Trimarian bridge fighting. Although the
Atlantians fought fiercely, their successive assaults crumbled along the
Trimarian shield wall. Our pikes dominated the killing field, while our archers
out-shot their opponents in spite of a numerical disadvantage. After much hard
fighting, Atlantia, reduced to nearly equal numbers by their massive losses
withdrew from the bridge and challenged battle in the open. As the war-point was
possession of the bridge rather than destruction of the enemy, King Solomon
wisely refused the bait.
While the enemy hovered just beyond their
bridge-head, Lord Treve Morningstar advanced beyond our shield wall to offer
single combat. As squire to Crown Prince Michael of Atlantia took up the
challenge. While Trimarian spectators (including the dead) thundered "Treve!
Treve! Treve!" the duel was fought and won by the hard-hitting Trimarian lord. A
parley followed at the center of the bridge between the two Kings and their
principal advisors. In consequence, Atlantia moved back onto the bridge, facing
Trimaris on her own ground. The Atlantian warriors died gallantly, but die they
did to the last fighter. There was no time limit set for the battle, so the
Atlantian decision to meet death head-on rather than stalling in vain hope of a
break was most courteous. It saved valuable time for al concerned, and was much
appreciated by Trimaris, which responded with "Vivat Atlantia!" to honor a
chivalric foe.
Although the gray day was rapidly closing in, the woods
battle remained to be fought. As the smaller army, Trimaris took the banner into
the woods. After a decent interval, Atlantia began her hunt. The Trimarian
strategy was to entrust the banner to a mobile banner guard under Duke Aaron in
the remote reaches of the wood. The remainder of the army established road
blocks on the one major trail running through the forest, or formed ambush
groups to confuse, mislead and, of course, kill Atlantian search parties. The
resurrection point was a small wooden footbridge close to the entrance to the
forest on the main trail.
For a time, the Trimarian strategy worked
well, with Atlantia being forced to fight Trimarian blocking parties and taking
considerable casualties. Unfortunately, Atlantian numbers permitted them not
only to accept theses losses without inconvenience, but also to hit Trimarian
positions from the front while flanking them through the undergrowth.
Eventually, Atlantian war parties saturated the wood, located the banner, and
overwhelmed its defenders. The remainder of the battle consisted of grim
fighting for Trimaris.
By now, the Atlantians held the only path from
the resurrection point to the more open area at the back of the woods where the
banner was located, placing strong road blocks. Parties of resurrected
Trimarians had either to fight through these successive blocks (a rather
hopeless task) or try to filter sufficient numbers through the trackless
underbrush to build up enough strength in the critical backwoods combat area for
an assault on the banner guard. Most groups of reborn Trimarians decided the
off-road route gave the greater hope of success.
The thickets of
saplings, thorny vines and other brush dictated an advance in meandering,
single-file columns, which Atlantian hunter-killer groups repeatedly hit.
Straggling, spread out Trimarian units, without space to form up and under
orders to avoid random combat en route to the critical battle area, were badly
cut up by these attacks. For example, out of one group that started from the
resurrection point about 30 strong, only 3 actually reached the Atlantian banner
guard. Although Trimaris maintained a good kill ratio, resurrected Atlantian's
returned easily to action down the trail controlled by their army.
While Trimarian spirit kept our warriors attacking until the final
gun, even the most ardent fighters were not sorry to see this exhausting and
basically forlorn struggle come to a close. Evening was fast closing in as the
two armies marched wearily from the wood. And so the sun set on another
Atlantian victory.
Lynch River, though a primitive site in most ways,
boasted a large, circular hall which provided a fine setting for the combined
courts of Atlantia and Trimaris which followed. At the court of Solomon and
Chelsea, Countess Cara Marie was created a Mistress of the Pelican. This award
was greeted with great satisfaction by the folk of both lands, as her excellency
is widely loved in both Trimaris and Atlantia. The ladies of the Sisterhood of
the Black Widow were called before the thrones to take the valorous Lady Fara
Steinhauser into their company. Their Majesties also reopened the Fellowship of
the Quiver welcoming four archers into membership. The Crown took this
opportunity to formally thank Lord Jonathan Whitehart, Queen's Yeoman of
Trimaris, for his skillful direction of the Kingdom's archers during the battles
of the day.
And so, after three successive years of defeat at the
hands of Trimaris, Atlantia was able on her own ground to hammer out a
hard-fought but decisive triumph, with four victories to the single Trimarian
success. Although Trimaris was defeated, still I say that it was a good war.
Despite the usual invocations of the demon "Rhino" on each side, the fighting
was good and was enjoyed by the warriors of both realms. There were displays of
true chivalry, exemplary skill, and good fellowship that will stay with me after
I have forgotten the cold, misting rain of what was truly a "primitive
campsite." Sitting with the goodly company around the huge fire in our royal
encampment during the cold night after the battle is a memory I would not want
to have missed. And so ends my brief chronicle of the Atlantian War. Vivat
Trimaris! And wait 'til next year!

Talewinds, vol.8,
no.6, June AS XXIV Greetings to the populace of Trimaris from Their Royal
Majesties Baldar and Elspeth
We would heartily and gratefully like to thank
all of you who recently participated in the Second Fools' War in Meridies.
Verily, our hearts are filled with joy at the martial and artistic strengths we
displayed as a Kingdom. True, our Kingdom did not win the war point, but the
pride and endless valor displayed by Trimarian troops against combined forces of
two Kingdoms could not fail to move the spirit of any monarch. We are most proud
of your courage and warrior spirit in the face of such adversity.
Our
thanks to Duchess Branwen for her swift and competent work as Earl Marshal; Our
gallant Knights Erin, Darian, Brendan, Seosaidh, Raoul, Bryan and Ropesle; the
valiant fighters of Trimaris, and those of you who served as chirurgeons,
waterbearers and marshals. In live weapons, Peydar won knife-throwing (We heard
that he had learned to throw just the day prior!). As many of you know, Trimaris
did win the Arts and Sciences point. The showing of our artisans astounded and
delighted us (as well as the rest of the Known World). Trimaris swept thru the
27 categories with a total of 18 firsts, 12 seconds, and 17 third places. Both
our Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champions, Lady Genevieve La Rousse and Lord
Torkel Tryggvasson, entered numerous lovely items. Very special thanks must be
given to those Laurels, apprentices and talented folk who entered, judged and
sometimes did both. A Very special thanks from a grateful queen to her Laurels
who worked os hard at the war; Eglantine, Elom, Katrina, Ana Alicia, Jed and
Elina. We are proud of the incredible skill of our Kingdom artisans!
Lastly, but certainly not least of all, our omnipresent Pelicans again
served their Kingdom in a variety of ways. Master Tally and Mistress Victoria
entered in Arts and Sciences. Master Barar marshaled the war. Mistress Vasilikee
both arched and fought heavy armored combat, and Mistress Cher heralded in camp
and on the filed. Thank you all for the hard work.
Again Trimarians
proved their love and devotion to their Kingdom and the Dream - both on and off
the field. We Baldar and Elspeth, are most moved by your continued dedication
and We are most proud to be the Rulers of such an extraordinary Kingdom.

Minutes
of the Town Meeting reported and complied by Lord Klaus von Salzach, Kingdom
Historian
The meeting was attended by 31 gentles who came and went during
the course of the meeting. It was opened by Mistress Victoria, the Kingdom
Seneschal. The Seneschal of Loch Gryffyn reported that some new members have
problems with the extra $3.00 fee for non-members at events. Mistress Victoria
said that the new members at their first couple events can have this fee waived
if their local seneschal notifies the reservationist that they are new members.
A gentle asked if the $6.00 Associate Membership is a real membership. This is a
real membership, but you do not get the newsletter and cannot be a Kingdom
Officer. The Society Steward counts all types of memberships when listing total
members.
Lord Alexander Mareschal asked if a spouse needs a separate
membership in a family membership. Mistress Victoria told him that a family
membership grants one sustaining membership, the rest are associates. Therefore,
if a husband and wife are both Kingdom Officers, one must have a separate
sustaining membership.
Huan asked if a pool could be established to pay
$6.00 memberships for newcomers. Mistress Victoria replied that Mistress Hilary
has issued a directive prohibiting this. Hon Lady Orianna Goldenhair added that
a newcomer should have sufficient interest in joining the club without someone
else paying his or her membership fee. Mistress Warjna asked about the
membership requirements for Peers. Mistress Victoria replied that to vote in a
polling order you must be a paid member.
A lady asked if an Associate
Membership will get your name and device registered. Lord Lance Nystrom, the
Triskele Herald, said that a separate fee must be paid to register a name or
device with the College of Heralds. A membership will only get your name listed
with the Registry. Lady Margarite asked if people who are living together but
are not related can get a family membership. Mistress Victoria advised her to
check with the Registry.
Master Juan Carlos Perez held the drawing of
the seven special categories for the new competition at the next Art/Sci. These
were: 1) Domestic Sciences - Food Preparation 2) Domestic Sciences - Brewing
beers and ales 3) Leatherwork 4) Woodwork 5) Needlework 6) Performing - Vocal
Music 7) Performing - other.
Lord Alexander Mareschal asked if we will
keep the separate Arts and Sciences degrees from TRU after the two respective
Kingdom Offices are combined. Hon. Lady Orianna Goldenhair, the Chancellor of
TRU, said she sees no reason to change. She is trying to emulate the university
system.
The Sheriff of the Ruins mentioned that he sees the same
people constantly on gate guard. He asked that more people come out to help at
the gate.
Mistress Victoria complained that some people are treating
events like the Holiday Inn. They are being rude and demanding to the event
hosts and seem to be forgetting that this is a volunteer organization.
The Seneschal of Loch Gryffyn complemented the way registration was
done at TMT. Mistress Victoria agreed except that the traffic got backed up at
the Wewa gate. She recommends having the gate guards get the names of all people
coming into the event on index cards and later comparing these to the
registration list. Hon. Lord Erik of Telemark gave suggestions for anyone
wanting to do an event with registration at the gate. First, don't try it if you
do not have at least 10 parking spaces at the gate. Second, have a safe way to
shuttle money from the gate. Third, make sure you have a working gate guard
system so that the reservations people won't be there alone.
Hon. Lady
Fara Steinhauser said that it seems that new people have not had the SCA honor
system pushed on them. In the old days, you could leave a wallet on a table
without worrying. Now people are even reporting benches stolen. Lord William
Montgomery suggested giving newcomers an escort at events to show them how
things are done in the SCA.
Lady Margarite reported that Camp Keystone
has been sold. The new owners are now working on fixing up the camp.
Rebecca Goldenhair mentioned that she and other members of Southkeype
often arrive at events at around 3 am only to find the reservation desk
abandoned and their reserved cabin spaces occupied. She asked that
reservationcrats stay open until 3 am to catch the arrival of members from some
of the distant shires. Mistress Victoria suggested assigning cabins at the site
and that autocrats should check to make sure that people are in the right
cabins. She also asked that people not drape off sections of cabins, bed
curtains are fine. It was jokingly suggested that we host Sea Raids in Key West.
Mistress Victoria closed the meeting.
In Memoriam
Mistress Muireann deora-de of Rivercroft, called Strider
Twelve years ago, a wanderer in search of a home discovered a place by the
shore of the eastern sea, where dolphins played and eagles soared. It was a land
of many rivers and majestic oaks...and a wonder the like of which was to be
found no where else in all the world. For even as she stood and gazed over this
land there came a mighty rush of wind and fire, and Strider beheld a miracle; A
new star was rising from the sea to take its place in the heavens. At this sign
she vowed to make that land her home, and she named it Starhaven. On June 14th,
in the twenty-fourth year of the Society, Srider left the home she had made here
to resume her wanderings beyond the lands where mortals may fare. We of her
shire, Starhaven, will miss her deeply; but we wish her well in her search for
her true home, and will think of her whenever we see the stars rise.

purchase of a new library building and books. They have asked the SCA, through
the Shire of Amyergorod, to assist them in this endeavor by providing what we do
the best - we need fighters to put on a fighting demo - we need craftsmen,
musicians, dancers, and folk who just want to wander around in garb. For those
who want to make it a full weekend instead of just a Saturday demo, the Badger

be held on January 27th. Mistress Victoria replied that the war will be held
somewhere in Meridies. She has not heard anything official. The Crown is
handling the event, please direct questions to them.
The H.L.
Loraybeck asked if Trimaris will get any of the money from Fool's War. Victoria
said no. It is hosted by a group in Meridies. Victoria said that she has asked
Her Majesty about getting us (Trimaris) more input on the Arts/Sci part of the
war.
Victoria said that we had unattended children running around the
site yesterday. Some were even trying to ride the camp's horses. Victoria and
the Autocrat (Lady Becc ben Cork) both said that if they find any unattended
children, the parents and the kids will be kicked off site.
H.L. Rurik
Stoianov said that his wife, Lady Serina, will clear up some of the
administrative confusion in the Ministry of Children. Mistress Victoria said
that the KMOC is not a babysitting service. The past problems with the KMOC have
been a lack of adult volunteers and people using House Hobbyhorse as a day care
center to dump their kids while they go off and have fun. Lady Serina would like
local groups to appoint a representative for the KMOC. This person would plan
children's activities at local events.
Mistress Victoria said that
mundane clothing should be worn only while setting up Friday night, Sunday
morning while packing or at a Town Meeting. H.L. Rurik suggested leaving a cloak
handy to throw over mundanes. Mistress Warjna said that Corpora requires garb to
participate in activities.
Baron Master Elom said that there was a
lack of courtesy at Court. People standing outside the overcrowded hall could
not hear the proceedings because of others talking. Victoria said that there are
many new members on site. Rurik and Lord Lance Nystrom both taught classes to
newcomers. These classes will now be offered at all Kingdom events. Victoria
said that she, Master Taliesynne and Mistress Atalaya and Mistress Adalhaid want
to ensure that people are not rude to the autocrats and reservationcrats.
Lord Guillermo da Firenze said that the merging of the Arts and
Sciences offices is going on now. All Arts and Sciences reports should be sent
to Guillermo at the TRU Registrar address. H.L. Guillermo Perez said that
it is a local option to merge the two offices. It would be easier for the group
if the offices were merged. Mistress Victoria said that we don't need two
offices as we are a small kingdom. We are trying to cut out deadwood and
streamline the offices. Ld. Guillermo Perez jokingly said that he resents being
called "deadwood." He said that the merge will take place at Art/Sci.
Lord Siegfried Heydrich, the Lymphad Herald was introduced. Rurik
asked if the new submission forms will be around for a while. Siegfried said
yes, they've been approved by Laurel. Lord Taalabhi asked about the status of
his device. Siegfried said that he doesn't have it. Lady Rebecca Goldenhair told
Taalabhi that his name and device did not pass.
Victoria will have a
new representative for the Kingdom at Pennsics. Anyone interested in the
position should see her.
Baroness Ara said that she heard that White
Buck Forest (Savannah GA) was going to join Trimaris. Victoria said that White
Buck Forest will stay in Meridies.
Rurik was congratulated on his
fund-raising efforts. We raised $320.00 at Pie-A-Peer and $190.00 at the masseur
auction. Laurels were encouraged to make prizes for the upcoming prize lyst.
Victoria said that we would eventually like to buy video equipment for
Kingdom. Rurik pointed out that Francois of Starhaven has been taping Art/Sci
classes. Francois was invited to help with the taping in an official capacity.
He was directed to talk to Lord Klaus, the Kingdom Historian.
We
should send more things to Castillos de Oro. They are on a military base in
Panama and cannot get many supplies. Tapes of classes, patterns, paperwork, and
information on computer disk are examples of useful things to send them. Lord
Guillermo da Firenze reminded us that people there need materials for science
projects, like hops and yeast for brewing. Lady Elfwyn said that she has been
sending packets of newsletters to them. victoria said that Castillos de Oro had
two events and that the last one made $13.00. They have 13 active people and 5
subscribing members.
The meeting was closed by Mistress Victoria.
